Improving Access to Safe Drinking Water in Tajikistan through USAID

In Rudaki District, Tajikistan, on April 12, 2024, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) celebrated the inauguration of a new water system in Rohati village. This vital infrastructure serves over 3,000 individuals from 455 households with access to safe drinking water. This project is part of USAID’s initiative to support 12 communities in Tajikistan by rehabilitating water supply systems through public-private partnerships, ensuring long-term sustainability.
To ensure the success and longevity of the project, USAID worked closely with the private water operator in Rohati village to develop a robust business plan for the water system. Additionally, an electronic billing system was introduced, and water meters were installed in households to enhance efficiency and accountability.
During the opening ceremony, USAID Tajikistan Mission Director Peter Riley emphasized the importance of providing safe drinking water to all individuals. He stated, “The U.S. Government believes that everyone has the right to safe drinking water. USAID strives to increase access to safe drinking water across all regions of Tajikistan. Access to safe drinking water is crucial for public health, dignity, equity, and environmental protection, and USAID is committed to this goal.”
Over the past five years, USAID has rehabilitated and constructed 30 drinking water supply systems in Tajikistan, benefiting over 100,000 people with safe drinking water. The agency remains dedicated to supporting increased access to safe drinking water in all regions of the country.
USAID is renowned as the world’s premier international development agency, leading efforts to drive development results globally. For more information about USAID’s work in Tajikistan, visit the agency’s website and Facebook page.
