Improving Hungary’s Expat Friendliness: What Can be Done to Welcome Foreigners?

In recent years, Hungary has been facing challenges when it comes to welcoming and integrating foreigners. According to the 2024 Expat Insider survey by InterNations, Hungary ranks 44th in the ‘Ease of Settling In’ index, indicating that expatriates find it difficult to feel at home in the country.

The survey evaluates three main categories: ease of making friends, adapting to local culture, and the overall sense of being welcomed. Expats in Hungary often report struggles in forming friendships with locals and adjusting to the culture, a trend also seen in other European countries like Germany, Norway, and Finland.

On the contrary, Central and South American countries like Costa Rica, Mexico, and Brazil excel in welcoming expats, with locals being warm and friendly. Costa Rica, in particular, ranks first on the index, with a high percentage of expatriates feeling welcomed and at home.

Despite the challenges faced by expatriates in Hungary, the expatriate community in Budapest continues to grow, drawn by the city’s vibrant nightlife, cultural scene, and affordable cost of living. However, building meaningful friendships remains a significant hurdle for expats planning to settle in Hungary long-term.

To improve Hungary’s ranking and create a more welcoming environment for expats, efforts should be made to introduce language courses, cultural programs, and community events to facilitate social connections. Language barriers often hinder foreigners from fully integrating into Hungarian society, highlighting the need for expanded language education and support systems.

While Hungary may not currently rank as one of the top destinations for expatriate friendliness, there is potential for improvement. By implementing measures to enhance integration and foster a more inclusive environment, Hungary can become a more welcoming destination for expats in the future.
