Increase in Drinking Water Source of Marmara Region: 30 cm in 1 Month

The water level of Sapanca Lake, the most important drinking water source of the Marmara Region, has seen a significant increase of 30 centimeters in just one month. This rise comes after the lake’s water level hit a five-year low of 29.97 meters due to above-seasonal temperatures and insufficient rainfall in the autumn and winter months.

Thanks to intermittent rainfall in the city over the past week, the lake’s water level has started to climb, reaching 30.23 meters this month. The increase can be attributed to snowfall in the higher regions of the city and recent showers.

According to information from Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality Water and Sewerage Administration (SASKİ), the maximum occupancy of Sapanca Lake is 32.20 meters. As of January 17, the water level was measured at 32.02 meters in 2024, 30.99 meters in 2023, and 30.99 meters in 2022. In 2021, the water level was 31.93 meters, while in 2020 it was 30.34 meters and in 2019 it was 31.74 meters.

In 2014, the water level of the lake had dropped to 29.64 meters due to drought, but with effective rainfall over the years, it has now returned to its previous levels. With recent rains pushing the water level above the critical mark, it is anticipated that the lake will reach maximum levels with the expected snowfalls during the winter months.
