Increase in Greece’s pushback of migrants prompts UN alarm
UNHCR Urges States to Respect Human Rights Amidst Increasing Deportations and Pushbacks
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has expressed concerns over the escalating number of deportations and pushbacks experienced by refugees and asylum seekers in Europe. UNHCR spokesperson Shabia Mantoo has called on the states involved to fulfill their commitments and uphold fundamental human rights, including the right to life and asylum.
Mantoo emphasized the need for these activities to cease and stressed that it is crucial for states to respect the basic rights of individuals seeking safety and protection. She added that refugees and asylum seekers are growing increasingly vigilant due to the rising frequency of deportations and pushbacks.
The spokesperson’s comments come in response to recent reports from the Turkish Coast Guard regarding the situation of migrants attempting to cross land and sea borders. According to Mantoo, UNHCR advocates for an end to these harmful actions and urges states to prioritize the well-being and safety of vulnerable individuals.
Addressing the tragic incident that occurred on June 14, when a boat carrying immigrants capsized off the coast of Greece, resulting in the death of 82 people, Mantoo expressed deep concern. She stated that UNHCR welcomes the launch of an investigation into the incident and called for an impartial and independent inquiry to determine the causes of the tragedy and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Mantoo also stressed the importance of including the voices of those affected in the investigation. She highlighted the need to ensure their safety and provide them with an opportunity to share their testimonies and perspectives.
The disaster off the coast of Greece on June 14 involved a fishing boat carrying irregular migrants. Alarm Phone, a nonprofit organization, reported that there were approximately 700 people on board, with 104 individuals rescued and brought to Kalamata Port.
In a separate incident on July 2, Greek elements pushed 84 irregular migrants into Turkish territorial waters. The Turkish Coast Guard, specifically the Northern Aegean Group Command, successfully rescued and landed these individuals off the coast of Ayvacık, Çanakkale. After the necessary procedures were completed, the 84 individuals were transferred to the Ayvacık Foreigners’ Removal Center.
As the situation continues to unfold, UNHCR remains committed to advocating for the rights and well-being of refugees and asylum seekers. It urges all states to respect fundamental human rights and fulfill their obligations under international law.
