Increase in Minority Hungarian Children Enrolling in School in Southern Slovakia Brings Joy

In Štúrovo (Párkány) and Nové Zámky (Érsekújvár), schools in South-Slovakia are opening new classes in Hungarian to cater to the Hungarian-speaking population in the region. In Štúrovo, the Ady Endre Elementary School will be opening three first-grade classes this school year, despite a declining birth rate. Last year, the school was able to launch four classes, but this year they are satisfied with three classes based on the number of enrolled students.

Both the Ady Endre Elementary School in Štúrovo and the Czuczor Gergely Elementary School in Nové Zámky are Hungarian minority institutions in Slovakia, providing education in Hungarian for the local population. The schools plan to offer traditional, sports-oriented, and full-day school-home classes this year. The full-day classes are aimed at parents who are unable to be as involved in their children’s daily study preparation due to work schedules.

At the Czuczor Gergely Elementary School in Nové Zámky, enrollment for this school year was successful with 50 children enrolled in the first grade. The school prepared for enrollment by organizing programs for future first-graders and their parents, fostering familiarity and trust. They also conduct enrollment via an online platform, allowing parents to complete administrative tasks from home.

Overall, the schools in Štúrovo and Nové Zámky are pleased with the enrollment numbers and are looking forward to welcoming new students. The schools express gratitude for the trust of the parents and promise to do their best to honor that trust.
