Incredible Footage: Lightning Strikes Wizz Air Flight in Budapest

Wizz Air plane struck by lightning

On Saturday morning, a Wizz Air flight from Budapest to London was struck by lightning, with one of the passengers inside the plane capturing the moment on film. The incident was reported by a passenger in the “Aviation – PlaneSpotting” Facebook group, noting that the Airbus A321-271NX and its occupants were unharmed.

The passenger described the experience as just a light and a small sound effect, with the plane continuing its journey undisturbed. Despite the lightning strike, the passenger in front of them remained unfazed throughout the flight.

Rare footage from inside the cabin showing what it’s like to be struck by lightning on a passenger jet was captured by the passenger filming the dense thunderstorm cloud the plane was flying through.

According to Zsolt Szüle, an instructor pilot, the plane’s aluminium outer layer protects the body of the aircraft during a lightning strike. The fuselage, made from conductive metal alloys, acts as a lightning rod, conducting the electrical charge in a way that ensures the safety of passengers and crew.

Despite the average statistic of planes being struck by lightning once or twice a year, there have been no reports of air incidents caused by lightning strikes due to the protective measures in place. Passengers can rest assured that aircraft are well-equipped to handle such natural occurrences.
