Infamous ‘Satan’s Secretary’ Irmgard Furchner Dies at 99

Irmgard Furchner, known as the Satan’s Secretary, passed away at the age of 99 after being accused of assisting in more than 10,000 murders at a concentration camp in Northern Poland. The German press confirmed his death on January 14th, although it had not been reported in the media until now.
Furchner’s lawyers attempted to appeal the decision last July, arguing that there was no clear evidence that he was aware of the horrific crimes being committed in the camp. However, the court rejected the objection in August and upheld the conviction for aiding and abetting thousands of murders.
During the trial, Furchner, who served as the stenographer and secretary to the camp commander, claimed that he was not aware of the mass killings taking place. Prosecutors sought a sentence of probation for only two years if found guilty.
Conditions in the camp, known as Stutthof, were deplorable, with tens of thousands of non-Jewish Poles being sent there. By the time the camp was liberated in May 1945, it housed over 110,000 prisoners, many of whom perished from disease, hunger, or forced labor.
Furchner’s death marks the end of a long and painful chapter in history, shedding light on the atrocities committed during the Holocaust. May we never forget the lives lost and the suffering endured by those who were unjustly persecuted.
