Innovative Ammunition Factory Opens in Várpalota
Hungary Achieves Self-Sufficiency in Medium Caliber Ammunition Production
Hungary has reached a significant milestone in its defense capabilities with the inauguration of the Várpalota Defense Industrial Complex’s medium caliber ammunition factory. Defense Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky announced that Hungary will now be self-sufficient in the production of 30 millimeter medium caliber ammunition. This ammunition will not only be used for the Lynx infantry fighting vehicle but also for the turret armament of other NATO combat vehicles, making it a valuable export product.
The recent Russia-Ukraine war has underscored the importance of having all necessary tools for combat, with Minister Szalay-Bobrovniczky emphasizing the crucial role of ammunition in achieving success on the battlefield. This new production line will ensure that Hungary has the necessary ammunition to defend itself effectively.
Hungary’s commitment to building a strong defense industry is evident in its achievement of reaching the two percent of GDP defense spending level required by NATO. The recent delivery of the first Hungarian-made Lynx KF-41 infantry fighting vehicle further demonstrates Hungary’s dedication to enhancing its defense capabilities.
The Várpalota Defense Industrial Complex, a joint venture with German company Rheinmetall, will provide employment opportunities for fifty workers initially, with plans to expand production and create hundreds more jobs in the future. Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger expressed gratitude for the Hungarian government’s support and highlighted the potential for future collaboration and sales of the ammunition produced.
Minister Szalay-Bobrovniczky also announced plans for the production of larger caliber ammunition, such as 120 millimeter tank ammunition and 155 millimeter artillery ammunition. These developments are crucial for meeting both domestic and international demand, with the goal of exporting to other countries in addition to fulfilling Hungary’s defense needs.
The establishment of the medium caliber ammunition factory marks a significant achievement for Hungary’s defense industry, positioning the country as a key player in providing essential ammunition for both domestic and international defense efforts. With the support of partners like Rheinmetall, Hungary is poised to further strengthen its defense capabilities and contribute to global security.
