Innovative Strategies to Boost Clean Energy in Turkey

Turkey is making significant strides towards increasing its renewable energy capacity to reduce its dependency on imported energy sources. Currently, 67 percent of energy in Turkey is imported, making it crucial to incorporate more clean energy sources and energy efficiency processes into the system.
With the implementation of policies and investments in renewable energy, Turkey has seen an increase in its renewable energy installed capacity for all sources. The country has also introduced large and medium-sized installations through projects like YEKA, which have helped boost the use of domestically produced equipment.
As of the beginning of October, the renewable energy installed capacity in Turkey has reached a total of 67,027 megawatts, constituting 58.72 percent of the total electricity capacity in the country. Dam and river hydroelectric power plants hold the highest share among renewable energy sources, followed by solar, wind, geothermal, and biomass.
Turkey’s performance in electricity production from wind and solar exceeds the world average, and with a growing population and industrialization, electricity demand is expected to reach 510 terawatt hours by 2035. To combat the climate crisis, Turkey must reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and increase investments in clean energy resources to achieve zero emissions.
The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources reported an energy bill of around 70 billion dollars last year, with similar expectations for this year. The upcoming new strategy and YEKA tender details are anticipated to be crucial in furthering Turkey’s clean energy diversity and strengthening its position in the global rankings.
Renewable energy sources are expected to be integrated into the economy in an environmentally friendly manner as soon as possible. Hakan Erkan, Secretary General of GENSED, highlighted the importance of YEKA tenders in supporting the mobilization of the renewable energy sector, emphasizing the need for companies with the necessary experience and financing to win these tenders for the rapid commissioning of power plants.
In conclusion, Turkey’s commitment to increasing its renewable energy capacity and reducing its reliance on imported energy sources is a step in the right direction towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future.
