Innovative Yurt Design by Kazakh Architect Receives Global Acclaim

Kazakh Architect Ravil Nurgissa Wins ICONIC AWARD for Modern Yurt Design

Kazakh architect Ravil Nurgissa has recently been awarded the prestigious ICONIC AWARD presented by the German Design Council in the Innovative Architecture category for his innovative take on the traditional yurt. The award-winning design reimagines the yurt, a structure used by nomads for centuries, into a more contemporary and sustainable building that retains its ease of assembly, transportability, and sliding walls.

In an interview with The Astana Times, Nurgissa shared the inspiration behind his project, highlighting the key features of the design and his vision for the future. He expressed his lifelong passion for architecture, stating, “I never had to think much about what I wanted to do in life; I always knew I would become an architect.”

Nurgissa’s journey in architecture began at the College of the Kazakh State Academy of Architecture and Construction (KazGASA) in 2012, where he later completed his degree. As he embarked on his career, he became intrigued by the idea of giving the traditional yurt a modern twist.

After several attempts at 3D design, Nurgissa successfully integrated modern technology into the iconic yurt shape. His design incorporates features such as a water purification system, bio-septic tank, water heater, and electricity generated through solar panels. Additionally, the yurt is elevated on stilts to allow grass to continue growing beneath it, emphasizing environmental respect in every detail.

Nurgissa’s project stood out among 540 entries from 36 countries reviewed by the ICONIC AWARDS jury this year. Despite being the smallest project among the winners and yet to be implemented, Nurgissa believes that the harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, along with its innovative approach and cultural significance, caught the jury’s attention.

Receiving this international recognition has served as a guidepost for Nurgissa, motivating him to continue pushing forward with more ideas and designs. He emphasized the importance of investments and clients who value art in order to bring these projects to life.

The award ceremony took place on Oct. 8 at BMW Welt in Munich, bringing together architects, interior designers, and graphic artists from around the world. Nurgissa’s modern yurt design serves as a testament to the power of blending tradition with innovation in architecture.
