Instant Mobile Fines for Speeding Camera Offenders

Minister of Public Works and Transportation Erhan Arıklı has announced some major developments in the transportation sector in Northern Cyprus. One of the key changes is the renewal of speed detection cameras, with new cameras set to be introduced that will result in fines being sent directly to the offender’s mobile phone as soon as they are caught speeding.

Arıklı revealed that Radarsan, an organization affiliated with the Turkish defense industry, is currently producing 150 cameras to replace the existing ones, with the possibility of increasing the number to 300 if needed. Additionally, an electronic weighbridge system will be implemented to detect trucks and lorries carrying heavy loads above the legal limit.

In terms of license plates, Arıklı mentioned that the current two-letter and three-digit plates will be replaced soon. Two alternatives are being considered for the new license plate format, either “AA 001A” or “001 AA”, with a decision to be made by the Council of Ministers.

Road projects were also highlighted by Arıklı, with a focus on relieving traffic congestion in Nicosia through projects like the Northern Ring Road and smart junctions. The Minister emphasized the importance of these infrastructure developments in improving transportation efficiency.

Furthermore, Arıklı addressed the issue of fiber internet connectivity, stating that a tender will be held for the “fiber to home” project by the end of the year. He stressed the importance of transitioning to fiber networks to keep up with modern standards and ensure better communication capabilities.

Arıklı also discussed the precarious situation of Kyrenia and Famagusta ports, pointing out urgent repairs and investments needed to prevent further deterioration. He highlighted the handling tender as a factor hindering the privatization of the ports and emphasized the need for swift action to address the ports’ critical condition.

Overall, Minister Arıklı’s plans and initiatives aim to enhance transportation infrastructure, improve road networks, and modernize services in Northern Cyprus to meet the growing demands of the population. With these developments, the transportation sector in the region is set to undergo significant transformation in the coming months.
