InterCity Derailment Causes Chaos at Budapest Railway Station – Exclusive Photos

On Sunday evening, a train accident occurred near the tracks leading into Keleti railway station in Budapest. The Claudiopolis InterCity, arriving from Cluj-Napoca in Romania, derailed causing five carriages to come off the tracks. Fortunately, according to an official statement by MÁV, Hungary’s railway company, no one was injured in the incident.

Traffic disrupted at Keleti railway station

As a result of the derailment, access to the tracks leading into Keleti railway station has been completely blocked. This disruption has led to the suspension of all departures and arrivals at the station for the remainder of Sunday evening. Authorities have warned that the investigation and recovery efforts may take a significant amount of time.

Reports from readers of Telex indicate that passengers on trains halted due to the incident were left without information about the situation. Many passengers decided to disembark and walk towards the station on foot. One reader shared, “After waiting for 10–15 minutes, passengers started to disembark and walk along the tracks. We weren’t given any updates. After about 20 minutes, we also got off and left the area through the nearest exit, which was a gate in the soundproof fence. There was no panic, just impatient people.”

MÁV’s Facebook page provided further details on the disruptions to train services, including alterations to the following lines:

  • Trains running on the Budapest–Hatvan–Miskolc line will only operate as far as Kőbánya felső and will return towards Hatvan from there.
  • Trains on the Budapest–Újszász–Szolnok–Békéscsaba line will terminate at Rákos and then return towards Újszász.
  • Trains on the Budapest–Pécs and Budapest–Győr–Hegyeshalom routes will turn around at Kelenföld station.

Furthermore, passengers with train tickets will be able to use alternative public transport options, such as the M2 metro line between Keleti and Déli stations, the entire M4 metro line, tram 37A, and buses 161 and 168E.

As the investigation continues and efforts are made to recover the derailed carriages, passengers are advised to stay updated on any developments regarding train services at Keleti railway station.
