December 10: What is World Human Rights Day?
Every year on December 10, the world celebrates Human Rights Day, a day dedicated to recognizing the importance of human rights and the need for equal rights for all individuals. This date holds historical significance as it marks the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10, 1948.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was a monumental development that came after World War II, as states around the world united to secure the rights and freedoms of individuals. The declaration, prepared by the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, was adopted by the General Assembly in Paris on December 10, 1948.
It is important to note that the adoption of the declaration was not without opposition, as 6 socialist countries abstained from the vote, citing concerns that some of the principles in the declaration favored bourgeois class interests and would force the working class to compromise with ruling classes. Despite this opposition, the declaration was ultimately accepted with votes from the abstaining countries, as well as countries other than Saudi Arabia and the Union of South Africa.
On World Human Rights Day, it is crucial to reflect on the progress made in advancing human rights and to recognize the challenges that still exist in achieving equal rights for all.
