Heavy Snow Causes Significant Delays for International Trains in Hungary
The recent heavy snowfall in Hungary has caused significant delays for international trains commuting through the country. However, the Hungarian State Railways cannot be blamed for the situation, as the delays are a result of the heavy snowfall in Austria and Germany.
Reports indicate that up to 20 cm of snow fell in Hungary’s Western regions, but the snowfall in Austria and South Germany, particularly Bavaria, was even more substantial. This has led to delays and disruptions in the international train services coming from Hungary.
The Austrian State Railways (ÖBB) has disconnected the international trains coming from Hungary due to their regular and significant delays, as well as the renovation of the Vienna-Budapest railway line. As a result, trains from the West, including Railjet, Eurocity, and Euronight trains, have been affected, causing delays for passengers traveling to Budapest via Hegyeshalom and Győr.
As a result of the heavy snowfall, the German State Railways (Deutsche Bahn – DB) has also recommended passengers to delay their journeys, particularly around Munich.
Passengers in Budapest who have been affected by the delays can seek assistance at the customers’ centre in Budapest’s Keleti railway station, where they can receive information and tips for accommodation if their train has been cancelled or delayed.
Due to the extraordinary weather conditions, modifications have been made to the train timetables. For example, certain trains, such as the Kálmán Imre EuroNight and the Wiener Walzer Euronight, will not be running on specific dates.
The heavy snowfall has also impacted air travel, as a video from Munich shows snowfall baulking air traffic at the airport.
Overall, the heavy snowfall in Austria and Germany has led to significant disruption for international train services in Hungary, affecting passengers’ travel plans.
