Astronomers Redefine Boundary Between Interstellar Space and Galaxies
A recent study published in the journal Nature Astronomy has shed new light on the boundary between interstellar space and the “circumgalactic medium” (CGM), the gas cloud surrounding galaxies. An international team of scientists made this groundbreaking discovery, redefining our understanding of the vast cosmic web.
The gas cloud surrounding galaxies has long been a mystery to researchers. By analyzing the light absorbed by celestial objects like quasars, scientists have estimated that this gas cloud makes up approximately 70 percent of the mass of galaxies. However, until now, the boundary between interstellar space and the CGM had not been clearly defined.
Excitingly, recent observations suggest that the Milky Way may already be colliding with the Andromeda galaxy, contrary to previous predictions of a future collision. Associate Professor Nikole Nielsen from Swinburne University remarked, “It is quite likely that the CGMs of our own Milky Way and Andromeda are already overlapping and interacting.”
Using state-of-the-art deep space imaging techniques, the team was able to peer nearly 100,000 light-years into space, providing unprecedented insights into the structure and composition of the CGM. Professor Emma Ryan-Weber from Swinburne University expressed, “This is the first time we’ve been able to take a picture of this halo of matter surrounding a galaxy.”
The conditions within the CGM are vastly different from those inside galaxies, suggesting that external factors like radiation and shocks from surrounding galaxies play a significant role in heating the gas cloud. These discoveries offer new perspectives on how galaxies evolve and interact with their surrounding environment, providing valuable insights into the complex dynamics of the universe.
