Women of Struggle Honored at 8 March International Working Women’s Day Event

In celebration of 8 March International Working Women’s Day, an event titled “Women of Struggle” was held at the Yunus Emre Institute in Nicosia, shedding light on the stories of women who have made significant contributions to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

During the event, Pervin Gürler, General Manager of Retired Police, emphasized the importance of the resistance following the 20 July 1974 Peace Operation and shared insights into the persecution faced by Turkish Cypriot people. Gürler urged attendees to understand their history without harboring hatred and expressed gratitude to the Mujahideen and people who sacrificed their lives, emphasizing the significance of unity and patriotism.

Retired Teacher Birsen Şemsettin reminisced about her interactions with key figures such as Fazıl Küçük and founding President Rauf Raif Denktaş during her teaching years and stressed the importance of incorporating textbooks that highlight the Turkish Cypriot struggle into the curriculum.

Retired Ambassador Assoc. Dr. Hasibe Şahoğlu highlighted the crucial role of women in Turkish Cypriot history, particularly during the 1963 attacks, where women played vital roles despite limited resources. Prof. Dr. Ulvi Keser delivered a presentation titled “Women in the Turkish Cypriot Struggle,” underscoring the need to recognize and honor the contributions of women in Cyprus’s history.
