Nyíregyháza Zoo Welcomes Adorable New Addition: A Baby Pygmy Hippopotamus
The Nyíregyháza Zoo, also known as Sóstó Zoo in northeastern Hungary, is celebrating the arrival of a newborn pygmy hippopotamus. The zoo recently shared heartwarming footage of the baby hippo exploring the world alongside its mother, as reported by Hungarian Nation.
The zoo shared that the little female hippo, now gaining strength, has taken over the Tarzan’s Path runway, allowing visitors to catch a glimpse of the adorable offspring. The pygmy hippopotamus, a rare pachyderm on the brink of extinction, is native to a very small area in the tropical rainforests of West Africa. With only 2,000 individuals remaining in the wild, conservation efforts are crucial to ensure the species’ survival.
The breeding pair at Nyíregyháza Zoo, Broutille (25) and Hamlet (17), have been part of the facility since 2009 as part of the European Endangered Species Programme. The successful pair has welcomed their fifth offspring, with previous calves from 2011, 2015, 2017, and 2022 now thriving in another zoo.
The zoo highlighted the importance of coordinated breeding programs like the EAZA Ex-situ Programme, which plays a vital role in conserving endangered species. The program, launched by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria, focuses on managed breeding and data analysis to ensure the genetic diversity and health of captive populations.
In addition to the exciting news of the baby hippo, visitors of Nyíregyháza Zoo can experience the unique Ice Age Interactive Animal Show starting in May. The attraction offers a glimpse into the world of the Arctic Circle, showcasing the life of animals in the region and the effects of the Ice Age through interactive elements.
