Is it still worth going abroad to fill up with fuel in Hungary?

The downward trend in Hungarian fuel prices seems to be coming to an end as diesel prices are set to rise by HUF 2 from Friday onwards. ATV’s newscast recently compared Hungarian fuel prices with those in neighbouring countries to see how they stack up.
Fuel prices in Croatia were a point of interest for ATV’s crew, who visited the country to check out the cost of filling up with diesel. They found that diesel had actually become cheaper in Croatia a few days prior. With the recent increase in Hungarian diesel prices and the appreciation of the forint, the price difference between Hungarian and Croatian diesel prices is currently HUF 70 (EUR 0.18). This could mean savings of around HUF 5,000 (EUR 13) for those who travel to the border to refuel in cars with larger capacity tanks.
Many diesel car owners in Hungary also opt to cross the border into Slovenia for fuel and shopping, according to ATV. Slovenians reportedly welcome Hungarian visitors as more cars mean increased revenue from traffic. Additionally, some individuals, including a politician from Debrecen, prefer to travel to Romania for refueling and shopping, with potential savings of up to HUF 2-3000 (EUR 5.20-7.80) on a full tank.
On the other hand, diesel prices in Austria and Slovakia are similar to those in Hungary. Overall, the comparison of fuel prices across neighbouring countries highlights the potential for cost-saving opportunities for Hungarian consumers.
As the fluctuation in fuel prices continues, it is essential for consumers to stay informed and consider their options for refueling to make the most of their budget.
