Israel Detains Dozens of Journalists in the West Bank and Gaza Strip

The Palestinian Prisoners’ Association has raised concerns over the recent surge in detentions of journalists by Israeli authorities in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip. According to a statement released by the association, a total of 98 journalists have been detained since October 7, 2023, with 52 still being held in prison.

Among the detained journalists, 15 are reportedly held under “administrative detention”, a practice that allows Israel to detain individuals indefinitely without charge or trial. Additionally, there are 6 women journalists and 17 journalists from Gaza among those being held.

Israel has also arrested 12 journalists on charges of “provocation”, raising further concerns about the crackdown on press freedom in the region. In a separate statement, the Prisoners’ Media Office informed that photojournalist Hazem Nasser, who was detained 5 weeks ago, has been transferred to administrative detention.

The continued detention of journalists in the West Bank and Gaza Strip has been condemned by human rights organizations and press freedom advocates. Calls for the immediate release of the detained journalists have been made, urging Israel to respect the rights of journalists to report freely and without fear of reprisal.
