Israel Installs Iron Barriers at Al-Aqsa Mosque Gates

Recent developments at the Masjid al-Aqsa have sparked controversy and concern among many. Images captured by AA show iron plates being fixed outside the Faisal Gate, one of the gates of Al-Aqsa, as part of security measures. These iron barriers have also been installed at other gates such as “Gavanime” and “Hutta”, with reports indicating that more gates may soon have similar installations.
The Israeli police have defended their actions, stating that the barriers are meant to provide security for the police officers stationed at the gates of Masjid al-Aqsa and are not intended to impede worshippers. In a written statement, the police shared photos of officers standing inside the fixed platforms placed at the gates.
The situation at Masjid al-Aqsa is further complicated by the longstanding dispute over its administration and protection. Jordan, in accordance with agreements signed with Israel in 1994 and with Palestinian authorities in 2013, holds responsibility for religious affairs in Jerusalem and the protection of the holy sites. The Masjid al-Aqsa is under the jurisdiction of the Jerusalem Islamic Foundations Administration, affiliated with the Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Sacred Affairs in Jordan.
However, Israel’s occupation of East Jerusalem, including the Masjid al-Aqsa, since 1967 has led to allegations of violations of the status quo regarding the holy sites in the Old City. The ongoing tensions and security measures at Masjid al-Aqsa highlight the sensitive nature of the situation and the need for careful navigation to ensure the safety and sanctity of this revered site.
