Hezbollah’s Targeting of Tel Aviv Shakes Israel
Israel was shaken at the beginning of the week as Hezbollah targeted Tel Aviv with a ballistic missile for the first time. The sirens blared at dawn in and around the capital, once again heard in the early hours of Friday.
As the sirens rang around 00:40 local time, Tel Aviv residents threw themselves to the ground, with people waiting in fear on the sidewalks. It wasn’t just Tel Aviv that heard air raid sirens; the entire central region of Israel rushed to shelter in fear.
The published map showed the entire region from the capital of Israel to the West Bank in red. The ballistic missile that shook Israel was not fired from Lebanon; rather, Yemeni Houthis, who previously carried out a similar attack on September 15, once again launched a missile at Tel Aviv from 2,000 kilometers away.
The Houthis are set to make a statement today regarding the missile that passed through the airspace of Saudi Arabia and Jordan before reaching Israel. The Israeli army announced that the surface-to-surface ballistic missile was stopped by Arrow 3 air defense systems, stating the sirens were activated due to the danger of falling shrapnel.
Israeli media reported a traffic accident during the panic, which resulted in one person being injured. This isn’t the first time the Houthis have targeted Israel, having previously aimed at the southernmost city of Eilat. In mid-summer, a kamikaze armed unmanned aerial vehicle sent by the Houthis passed through Israeli air defense systems and crashed into a building in Tel Aviv, resulting in one fatality.
In response, Israeli jets retaliated by bombing Hodeidah, Yemen’s largest port on the Red Sea coast. The Houthis, controlling the west of Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, have been attacking ships passing through the Red Sea since mid-November. The Iran-backed group has sunk two ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, as well as hitting dozens with missiles or kamikaze drones. Their aim is for the Israeli occupation army to leave the Gaza Strip, leading to continued tensions in the region.
