Israel Urges US to Pressure South Africa to Drop Genocide Case
Israel’s attempt to influence the US Congress in response to a genocide case filed by South Africa has caused controversy, as reported by the US news platform Axios. Israeli Foreign Ministry sources revealed that Israel has been pressuring members of Congress to intervene and stop South Africa from pursuing the case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
The Republic of South Africa lodged a lawsuit against Israel at the ICJ, accusing it of violating the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. The case was filed on December 29, 2023, and South Africa requested urgent measures to be taken due to the situation in Gaza.
After hearings at the Peace Palace in The Hague, the ICJ issued precautionary measures on January 26 to prevent Israel from committing acts of genocide, provide aid to Gaza, and halt the destruction of evidence. Despite these measures, Israel continued its attacks, prompting South Africa to request additional measures.
Turkey also intervened in the case on August 8, becoming the 7th country to do so after Nicaragua, Colombia, Libya, Mexico, Palestine, and Spain. The ICJ has been closely monitoring the situation and issuing rulings to ensure the safety and well-being of Palestinians in Gaza.
The international community is closely watching as the legal battle between South Africa and Israel unfolds at the ICJ, highlighting the complexities of geopolitics and human rights in the region.
