Mossad Chief Suggests Targeting Iran to Stop Houthi Attacks
In a recent report by The Times of Israel, Mossad Director David Barnea has proposed targeting Iran in order to effectively combat the attacks by the Houthis. According to sources cited in the Israeli publication, senior officials have hinted at an increase in attacks against the Iran-backed Yemeni group in the near future.
This stance taken by Mossad Chief Barnea seems to contradict the views of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz, who have advocated for direct attacks on the Houthis. Haaretz newspaper noted that Barnea’s suggestion came after three unsuccessful rounds of attacks in Yemen. It is believed that targeting Iran, a long-time supporter of the Shiite rebel group, would yield more significant results.
“We do not need to enter Iran directly,” stated Mossad Chief Barnea to security officials, as reported by Channel 13. He emphasized the need for a different strategy, pointing out that solely targeting the Houthis may not be sufficient to halt their attacks. However, there has been no immediate confirmation or response to these statements.
Netanyahu, on the other hand, has expressed a different stance, dismissing Barnea’s assessment. He mentioned that Iran is a separate issue that will be dealt with at the appropriate time. Senior figures within the security agency have echoed Netanyahu’s position.
In recent days, the Houthis have launched multiple ballistic missiles and drones at Israel in support of Gaza. Netanyahu, speaking at a Hanukkah event, warned that the Houthis would face consequences similar to Israel’s other enemies. Air Force Commander Major General Tomer Bar also indicated that actions against the Houthis would escalate in the near future, with the Israeli Air Force ready to intervene as needed.
It is believed that Israel’s current operations in Yemen may not be enough to deter the attacks by the Houthis. There are expectations in the Israeli media that increased support from the USA or other Western powers could enhance their efforts. With the upcoming inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump on January 20, there is anticipation for more effective measures to be taken against the Houthi threat.
