Israel to Double Population in Occupied Golan Heights
In a significant move, Israel has agreed to double its population in the occupied Golan Heights. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized the importance of strengthening the Golan Heights, stating that it not only bolsters the State of Israel but is crucial at this time. Israel captured most of the plateau from Syria in 1967 and annexed it in 1981.
The Israeli government has unanimously approved a plan worth over 40 million shekels ($11 million) to drive demographic growth in the Golan Heights. Despite recent changes in Syria’s leadership, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has emphasized that threats to Israel from Syria persist. On the Syrian front, Mohammed al-Golani, also known as Ahmed al-Shara, the de facto leader, expressed reluctance to engage in new conflicts with Israel. He accused Israel of using false excuses to justify its attacks on Syria and emphasized the need for reconstruction and stability in the war-torn country.
Israel’s occupation of the demilitarized zone within Syria, which includes the strategic Mount Hermon and a Syrian military outpost, has sparked condemnation from several Arab nations.
