Istanbul Earthquake: Energy Released Exceeds 30 KTON TNT

AFAD’s Istanbul Earthquake Description: Energy released on 30 kton TNT
The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) has released new information regarding the 6.2-magnitude earthquake that struck the Silivri district of Istanbul on 23 April.
In the statement issued by AFAD, it was revealed that the earthquake, which occurred at 12:49 (TSI) on 23.04.2025, was felt in a radius of 300 km from the epicenter in various provinces. The epicenter of the earthquake was located approximately 24 km from Silivri, the nearest settlement. Although settlements on the southern coast of Istanbul experienced low accelerations during the earthquake, there was no structural damage or loss of life thanks to long-term risk reduction studies.
Following the main shock, a total of 291 aftershocks have been recorded, with the majority measuring below 3 in magnitude. The number of aftershocks measuring 4 and above is 8, and it is expected that the frequency of aftershocks will decrease in the coming weeks.
The energy released during the earthquake on 23 April 2025, with a magnitude of 6.2, was estimated to be over 30 KTON TNT, which is approximately 4 times the energy released during a similar earthquake in the region on 26 September 2019.
As the region continues to monitor aftershocks and assess the impact of the earthquake, AFAD will provide further updates and recommendations for residents in the affected areas.
