Istanbul Renamed and Early Warning System Developed by Engineer from Izmir

Kürşat Yurdagül, an Electrical and Electronics Engineer, has successfully developed an Earthquake Early Warning System that aims to prevent potential disasters caused by earthquakes. The device, which was put to the test on February 6, 2023 in Kahramanmaraş, was able to provide a warning 9 seconds before an earthquake hit the region.

Yurdagül emphasized that the system is designed to not only provide early warnings but also to mitigate risks during earthquakes such as explosions and elevator malfunctions. The device is programmed to promptly send data to designated locations to ensure swift responses to the impending earthquake.

“The warning time given by the device depends on the speed at which the fault breaks and its distance from the center of the earthquake,” Yurdagül explained. For earthquakes with a magnitude of 5 or above, the system is designed to automatically cut off natural gas, electricity, and elevator services to the nearest floor to facilitate evacuation.

Furthermore, Yurdagül highlighted that the Earthquake Early Warning System has received various certifications, including a technological product certificate, a domestic producer certificate, and an International Standards Organization (ISO) certificate. He shared a success story where the device managed to alert a factory in Adana 82 seconds before the earthquakes hit Kahramanmaraş on February 6, thereby preventing potential explosions or fires within the premises.

Yurdagül also stressed the importance of collaboration with public institutions, as the device is connected to the State Material Office, allowing for efficient communication and response coordination during times of emergency. With its innovative features and impressive performance, the Earthquake Early Warning System developed by Kürşat Yurdagül is poised to make a significant impact in disaster prevention and management efforts.
