Istanbul Residents Fear Earthquake, Spend Night Outdoors
After the recent earthquake of 6.2 magnitude in Megakent, many citizens are still feeling uneasy and choosing to stay outside for safety. Families who sought refuge at Vakıfbank Sports Palace in Üsküdar have improvised beds using the covers they brought with them.
While some families spent time in the stands of the sports palace, children played in the competition area. The number of citizens spending the night at the Kağıthane Hasbahçe Recreation Area has decreased since yesterday. Some families are staying in tents set up in the field, and the Turkish Religious Foundation Kagithane Branch teams have been distributing hot soup to citizens in need.
Seher Camcı, who left her tent, shared her experience of the earthquake, stating, “I was very scared during the earthquake. I have an elderly mother, so we sent her to my brother’s house. We decided to set up a tent in the picnic area. Fortunately, we are safe now.” Many citizens have also set up tents in Zeytinburnu Millet Garden following the earthquake.
Serkan Özkan, who is staying in a tent with his family in the garden, expressed concern for his children’s safety. He emphasized the need for urban transformation in old buildings to prevent future disasters.
Kizilay has set up 2 tents in the garden for the elderly and children, providing hot soups, tea, water, and sandwiches to those seeking shelter.
Some citizens have opted to spend the night at Beylikdüzü Municipality Closed Market-Sports Facility-Post-Afyon Housing and Logistics Center Complex. Mehmet Selim, a resident there, had experienced a previous earthquake in Mersin before migrating to Istanbul with his family. He highlighted the importance of safety and comfort during such challenging times.
As citizens seek refuge in various locations, the support of municipalities and organizations like Kizilay is crucial in providing comfort and aid to those affected by natural disasters. The unity and resilience of the community in facing these challenges are truly commendable.
