Italy also says no to the distribution of migrants, asserts Giorgia Meloni
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni criticized other EU member states for shirking their responsibilities in the distribution of migrants, stating that Hungary is not the only country resisting this move. Meloni made these remarks during a press event in Milan, where she emphasized the need for cooperation to address the issue of illegal immigration.
Meloni highlighted the lack of support from countries like France and Germany in assisting Italy with the influx of over 100,000 immigrants arriving on Italian shores annually. Despite taking office in October 2022, Meloni noted that the debate in Europe has primarily focused on the distribution of migrants, rather than finding solutions to stem the flow of illegal immigration.
The Italian Prime Minister advocated for agreements with countries of origin and transit, such as Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya, to tackle illegal immigration more effectively. As a result of these efforts, migration pressure in the Western Mediterranean has decreased by 60% since last spring. Meloni stressed the importance of citizens’ votes in strengthening the position of governments that prioritize cooperation on immigration issues.
In contrast to the stance of some EU member states, the Hungarian government remains staunchly opposed to illegal migration and rejects the quota system for distributing migrants. Hungary considers illegal migration a threat to both its economy and national security. The government emphasizes the need for a comprehensive approach to address the root causes of migration and enhance cooperation with other countries to combat illegal immigration.
