Izmir’s Sweltering Heat: The Empty Streets of a Literal Sauna
Hot Weather in Izmir: Citizens Struggle to Keep Cool
The Meteorology 2nd Regional Directorate Forecast and Early Warning Center has reported that air temperatures in the Aegean Region, particularly in Izmir, are well above seasonal norms. The scorching temperatures, reaching up to 39 degrees, have left citizens gasping for breath. Many have sought refuge under the shade of trees on busy streets and avenues, such as Kordon.
As per the latest meteorological assessments, it is expected that temperatures will remain 2 to 7 degrees Celsius higher than seasonal norms in the region on Friday and Saturday.
The hot weather, compounded by high humidity, has led to deserted streets in one of the busiest parts of the city, Alsancak Kordonboyu. Citizens have opted to stay indoors or find shelter under trees to escape the oppressive heat.
Many individuals, like Faik Duru and Ertan Temiztepe, have expressed their struggle with the sweltering conditions. Duru mentioned how he could not even spend five minutes outside with his grandchildren due to the intense heat, while Temiztepe highlighted the difficulties of carrying out daily tasks in such weather.
Burcu Şahin, a visitor from Ordu, described the weather in Izmir as “terribly hot” with a sauna-like effect. She plans to find a cafe to cool off and then seek out shaded areas to escape the heat.
As temperatures continue to rise, it is crucial for citizens to take necessary precautions to stay cool and hydrated during this heatwave. Stay safe and protect yourselves from the scorching sun in Izmir.
