Journalist Accused in Lawsuit Against Two Defendants

Ankara, Turkey – The President of the Association of Patiler, AFG, found himself in legal trouble after an incident involving journalist Ozgunlu, who was reporting on the arrest of 35 dogs in a quarantine in Şanlıurfa. The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office prepared an indictment which was accepted by the Ankara 57th Criminal Court of First Instance, leading to AFG being transferred to the courthouse for questioning.

During the incident, AFG was accused of assaulting journalist Ozgunlu and tearing her clothes inside the courthouse. The altercation lasted for 5 minutes, with police officers attempting to intervene but the attackers persisted in their actions against the journalist. A forensic medicine report included in the indictment revealed that AFG had inflicted a large number of assaults and nail traces on the journalist’s body.

The indictment calls for the defendants Fulya Törün and Nuray Akyol to be sentenced to up to 6 years in prison for charges of “simple wounding”, “insult”, and “damaging goods”. The seriousness of the situation has raised concerns about press freedom and the safety of journalists in Turkey.

The trial is set to proceed, with both sides preparing to present their cases in court. The outcome of this case will undoubtedly have implications for the protection of journalists and freedom of the press in the country.
