Journalists Union Boycotts BRTK Meetings over Board Member Dispute
Turkish Cypriot Journalists Union (KTGB) Boycotts BRTK Meetings Amid Board of Directors Dispute
The Turkish Cypriot Journalists Union (KTGB) recently made a bold move by announcing their decision to boycott all meetings until new members are appointed to replace the members whose terms of office have expired in the Board of Directors of Bayrak Radio and Television Corporation (BRTK).
In a statement released by the Union, it was highlighted that the institution’s board of directors continued to conduct meetings and make decisions with members whose terms of office had already expired, resulting in a situation that raised questions and controversy in the legal sense. The Union called on the Council of Ministers to act in accordance with the law and promptly appoint new members to the Board of Directors.
Furthermore, the Union pointed out that there is no provision in the BRTK Law allowing former representatives to continue in their roles under such circumstances. As a result, the Union stated, “In order to prevent any legal complications, KTGB Board members will abstain from attending meetings until the Council of Ministers appoints new members to the BRTK Board.” This decision was made to ensure compliance with legal requirements and maintain integrity within the organization.
The dispute surrounding the Board of Directors of BRTK has sparked a stand-off between the Turkish Cypriot Journalists Union and the Council of Ministers. The Union’s boycott of meetings serves as a strong message to urge prompt action and uphold transparency and accountability within the media organization.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the Council of Ministers will respond to the demands of the Turkish Cypriot Journalists Union and whether new members will be appointed to the Board of Directors of BRTK in a timely manner. Stay tuned for further developments on this issue.
