Kambarata-1: Central Asia’s Largest Hydropower Plant

Officials from Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, and Uzbekistan met in Tashkent on Jan. 28 to discuss the construction of the Kambarata-1 hydroelectric power plant (HPP) with a capacity of 1,860 megawatts. During the meeting, Kazakh Vice Minister of Energy Sungat Yessimkhanov highlighted that the plant will be one of the largest in Central Asia and will further strengthen the good-neighborly relations between the countries in the region.

The meeting focused on a roadmap outlining the financing stages and the implementation mechanism of the project. The Kazakh Energy Ministry’s press service reported that technical assistance from the World Bank is currently supporting the feasibility study of the project. This study includes assessments of the technical, economic, financial, environmental, and social components, as well as other key activities and studies necessary for the project’s implementation.

The Kambarata-1 hydroelectric power plant is expected to make a significant contribution to the energy infrastructure of the region and enhance cooperation between the countries involved. As discussions continue and progress is made on the project, it is clear that collaboration is key to achieving success in the development of large-scale energy initiatives in Central Asia.
