Kazybek Nogerbek Makes History by Winning FIDE World Junior Chess Championship
ASTANA – Kazybek Nogerbek, a talented 20-year-old chess player from Kazakhstan, has made his mark on the international chess scene by triumphing over 13 grandmasters to win the prestigious FIDE World Junior Chess Championship 2024. The championship, which took place from June 2 to 13 in Gandhinagar, India, saw Nogerbek emerging as the ultimate victor, as reported by the Kazakhstan Chess Federation’s press service.
This year’s FIDE World Junior Chess Championship Under 20 years (U20) welcomed 123 participants, including 13 grandmasters and 28 international masters. Nogerbek displayed exceptional skill and determination throughout the competition, scoring 8.5 points in 11 rounds and securing the gold medal on better tiebreaks than GM Emin Ohanyan from Armenia. This achievement not only earned him the top spot in the championship but also granted him a coveted ticket to the World Cup, a significant milestone in his journey towards competing for the world champion title in the candidates tournament. GM Luka Budisavljevic from Serbia claimed the bronze medal with eight points.
In the Girl’s section, 18-year-old IM Divya Deshmukh from India emerged victorious with an undefeated score of 10 points, showcasing her own impressive talent and skills on the chessboard.
Nogerbek’s historic win adds him to the prestigious list of Kazakh chess players who have claimed the title in the past, including Darmen Sadvakassov in 1998, Dinara Saduakassova in 2016, and Zhansaya Abdumalik in 2017. His previous successes include winning both the rapid and blitz titles in the World Youth U18 Championship in 2023. During the World Junior Chess Championship, Nogerbek was officially recognized as a Grandmaster by the FIDE Council, solidifying his status as one of the rising stars in the chess world.
