Kazakh Choral Artist Encourages Cultural Exchange at World Youth Choir
Ardak Bukharbekov, a chorist from Kazakhstan, recently made history by becoming the first chorist from his country to participate in the World Youth Choir (WYC). The WYC is an international ensemble comprised of young choral singers who use music to promote peace, unity, and harmony. Bukharbekov described his experience in an interview with The Astana Times, highlighting the opportunity to connect with diverse artists from around the world.
The WYC consists of 40 singers from 26 different countries. They recently embarked on a rehearsal session and concert tour in Croatia, Slovenia, and Hungary. Known for their multicultural composition and multilingual performances, the choir showcased a repertoire of European classical and sacred music by composers such as Claudio Monteverdi, Johannes Brahms, and Franz Liszt.
Bukharbekov, a member of the Erkegali Rakhmadiyev Philharmonic Chamber Choir in Astana, initially joined the WYC in 2019 as the only participant from Kazakhstan and Central Asia. This year, he participated in the choir’s alumni session, which brought together past participants of the program. The auditions in Kazakhstan were organized by Gulmira Kuttybadamova, a prominent conductor and the Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Astana Filarmonia chamber choir.
English language proficiency was one of the key selection criteria for the WYC, as all rehearsals and processes are conducted in English. Bukharbekov expressed his joy at being able to harmonize with choristers from different countries and described the experience as emotional and delightful.
The WYC performances were well-received by audiences, particularly in the small Croatian town of Grožnjan and at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest. Bukharbekov praised the acoustics of the Liszt Academy Music Hall, describing it as one of the best stages he has performed on.
Beyond the musical aspect, the WYC aims to foster cultural and professional exchange among its members. Bukharbekov regarded it as a mission to represent his country and took the opportunity to showcase the choral tradition of Kazakhstan. The social aspect of the choir was also significant, with Bukharbekov forming lasting friendships with participants from various countries.
Bukharbekov believes that music serves as a universal language that transcends linguistic and cultural barriers. Despite the diverse backgrounds of the WYC singers, they were able to communicate through their shared love for music. Bukharbekov described the WYC experience as both professional and personal growth, highlighting the emotional and dynamic aspects of choral art.
Choral music in Kazakhstan is relatively well-developed and supported by the state, although it may struggle to attract large audiences in the age of pop culture. However, Bukharbekov remains committed to promoting choral music in Kazakhstan and exposing more people to its diversity.
