Kazakh Ecology Ministry Shares COP29 Goals at Bonn UN Climate Meetings
The Kazakh Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources was actively involved in the discussions at the June United Nations Climate Meetings held in Bonn, Germany from June 3-13. Key topics such as climate financing, mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions, Kazakhstan’s participation in the global methane pledge, and the loss and damage fund were on the agenda.
During the opening of the meetings, UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell emphasized the importance of finance as a catalyst for climate action. He urged for more climate finance to be allocated while negotiations take place for a new collective quantified goal on climate finance. Stiell also highlighted the urgent need for measures to prevent the world from suffering severe consequences of global warming.
Looking ahead to COP29, which will be presided over by Azerbaijan following the United Arab Emirates, the focus is expected to be on climate financing. Saule Sabieva, the director of the Climate Policy Department of the Kazakh Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, stressed the importance of addressing global financial systems to facilitate climate transition.
Kazakhstan’s efforts to reduce CO2 emissions were also discussed, with the country aiming to reach a reduction target by 2030. Collaboration with international partners and the commitment to reduce methane emissions in the oil and gas sector were highlighted as key steps in addressing emissions.
Furthermore, Kazakhstan’s involvement in the loss and damage fund was acknowledged, with the country joining as an alternate member. The fund, established during COP28, aims to provide support to developing countries impacted by climate change. Progress on the fund’s procedures and funding allocation were discussed during the meetings.
