Kazakh Chess Grandmaster Kazybek Nogerbek Takes Third Place at Festival International des Jeux 2025
Kazakh chess grandmaster Kazybek Nogerbek has achieved a remarkable third-place finish at the Festival International des Jeux 2025 in Cannes, France. The prestigious tournament took place from Feb. 24 to March 2 and featured a total of 147 players, including six other grandmasters.
Nogerbek, who is only 20 years old, displayed outstanding skill and determination throughout the competition, scoring a total of seven points over nine rounds in the top category. His decisive victory over fellow Kazakh GM Alisher Suleymenov in the final round secured his spot on the podium.
The Indian Grandmaster Pa Iniyan emerged as the overall winner of the tournament, narrowly edging out Nogerbek by half a point. International Master Garg Aradhya claimed the second-place position based on a higher performance rating. Nogerbek’s impressive performance also resulted in a gain of seven Elo points to his rating.
The tournament boasted a prize fund of 10,000 euros (US$10,900), with the top three players receiving cash prizes of 1,800 euros (US$1,950), 1,200 euros (US$1,300), and 700 euros (US$760) respectively. Suleymenov finished in 16th place with six points, while two young Kazakh players, 11-year-old Alanna Berikkyzy and 12-year-old Timur Dushatov, secured the 86th and 93rd positions.
Nogerbek’s recent success at the Festival International des Jeux 2025 adds to his already impressive resume, as he had previously emerged victorious at the 2024 FIDE World Junior Chess Championship in Gandhinagar, India, defeating 13 grandmasters in the competition.
