Kazakh-Hungarian Cooperation Celebrates 10 Years of Strategic Partnership
ASTANA — The long-standing cooperation between Kazakhstan and Hungary has been a cause for pride, as highlighted by Kazakh Deputy Foreign Minister Roman Vassilenko during his recent visit to Budapest. In an interview with Hungary’s Mandiner weekly magazine, Vassilenko emphasized the strong ties between the two nations, ranging from trade and economic partnerships to collaborative efforts in nuclear energy.
The upcoming milestone of ten years since the signing of the strategic partnership agreement in June will be celebrated by both countries. Vassilenko noted the active political contacts between leaders, as well as the fruitful economic cooperation that has seen Hungarian companies investing $320 million in Kazakhstan since 2005.
In addition to economic ties, cooperation in the energy sector, particularly in nuclear energy, has been a key focus. With Hungary’s expertise in nuclear power and Kazakhstan’s position as a leading producer of natural uranium, there is ample opportunity for collaboration and exchange of knowledge in this field.
Hungary’s upcoming Presidency of the European Council also presents new possibilities for Kazakhstan to expand its EU relations. Vassilenko expressed optimism that Hungary will effectively manage this responsibility, benefiting both the EU and its partners. The focus on cooperation in areas such as clean energy, critical raw materials, and improved transport routes demonstrates the commitment to mutual growth and development.
The interview also touched on recent political reforms in Kazakhstan, specifically the large-scale constitutional amendments proposed by President Tokayev. These reforms have led to increased representation of various political parties in Parliament, as well as the restoration of the Constitutional Court to ensure compliance with human rights and the rule of law.
