
Kazakh President Joins BRICS Summit

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev highlighted the global significance of the BRICS alliance during a plenary session in Kazan on Oct. 24. The BRICS group, originally composed of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has expanded to include other countries like Iran, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates.
Tokayev emphasized the importance of BRICS in uniting nations across continents, promoting solidarity, and leveraging joint opportunities for the benefit of all participants. He noted that BRICS has the resources and experience to build a future based on principles of shared prosperity, mutual respect, and partnership.
The President also praised the multilateral efforts of BRICS in complementing the activities of the UN and advocating for peaceful conflict resolution and strategic stability. He specifically mentioned supporting Russia’s concept of equal security in Eurasia and China’s initiative on global security.
Furthermore, Tokayev expressed concern over tensions in the Middle East and called for joint efforts to address the root causes of conflicts. He advocated for reforms to the UN Security Council, emphasizing the need for increased representation from the Global South.
Highlighting Kazakhstan’s growing trade with BRICS countries, Tokayev outlined promising areas for cooperation in sectors such as trade, investment, IT, critical minerals, food security, education, and tourism. He also stressed the importance of partnerships in transit and transport sectors, including initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative.
In conclusion, Tokayev affirmed that the BRICS Plus format will enhance connectivity, reduce global imbalances, strengthen international security, and drive global progress. The summit brought together representatives from 36 countries and leaders from six international organizations, demonstrating the growing importance of BRICS on the global stage.
