Kazakh Prime Minister Urges Acceleration of Housing Restoration Efforts in Flood-Affected Regions

During the government meeting on July 17, Kazakh Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov issued instructions to expedite the restoration of housing in regions affected by recent floods. The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of addressing the damages caused by the natural disaster promptly.

According to reports from the Prime Minister’s press service, a total of 19,342 real estate objects, including houses and summer homes, were damaged by the flooding. Out of these, 8,578 properties were deemed beyond restoration. Efforts are underway to construct 2,578 new residences and acquire 6,000 real estate properties to replace the damaged ones.

Bektenov commended the progress made in the construction of 200 new houses in the North Kazakhstan Region and five in the Pavlodar Region. Additionally, 22 houses are set to be completed in the Kostanai Region in the near future.

While significant strides have been made in the restoration efforts, some regions are facing delays in construction timelines. Bektenov directed the mayors to mobilize resources and personnel to ensure that all tasks set by the President are completed within the allotted timeframe.

The government has allocated funds for repairing local roads and restoring schools in the affected areas. A total of 22.7 billion tenge (US$47.7 million) has been earmarked for road repairs, while 7.5 billion tenge (US$15.8 million) has been allocated for school restoration. All schools are expected to be fully operational before the start of the academic year.

In the wake of the disaster, 100% of houses in the affected regions have been surveyed and assessed. Compensation has been provided to 7,505 families for repairs and restoration work, with a total amount of 44.1 billion tenge (US$92.8 million) disbursed. Additionally, 3,921 families have already received new houses and apartments, with construction ongoing for 2,578 more residences.

As the government continues its efforts to rebuild and restore the affected regions, Bektenov emphasized the need for prompt action, adherence to safety guidelines, and accountability at the regional level. The focus remains on accelerating the pace of reconstruction to ensure that families impacted by the floods can return to normalcy as soon as possible.
