Kazakh Professor Serik Meirmanov appointed Vice President of Japanese University

Astana – Professor Serik Meirmanov from Kazakhstan has made history by being appointed as the Vice President of Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) in Japan. This makes him the first Kazakh citizen to hold a senior leadership position at a Japanese university. The official announcement was made by Olzhas Berkinbayev, head of the press service at Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Science and Higher Education, on his Facebook page.

Berkinbayev highlighted the significance of this appointment, stating that it not only recognizes Meirmanov’s outstanding professional and personal qualities but also showcases the growing international recognition of Kazakhstan’s scientific and educational institutions.

Prior to his new role, Meirmanov served as the Dean of Academic Affairs at APU for three years, where he played a key role in developing the university’s academic programs. With a background in both medicine and a Ph.D. obtained in Japan, Meirmanov has been instrumental in strengthening academic ties between Kazakhstan and Japan.

Meirmanov is not only a prominent figure in academia but also holds positions in Kazakhstan’s National Council for Science and Technology and serves as an international expert on the National Scientific Council.

Expressing his gratitude for the trust placed in him, Meirmanov stated, “I am honored to take on this responsibility and excited to contribute to the growth of APU. Representing Kazakhstan at this level in the international academic community is a source of pride for me, and I hope this appointment further strengthens scientific and educational ties between Japan and Kazakhstan.”

APU is known for its international environment, with approximately 6,000 students from over 100 countries. The university boasts a diverse faculty with half of its members being foreign specialists, focusing on preparing the next generation of global leaders. Meirmanov’s appointment is not only a personal achievement but also a significant step towards enhancing collaboration between the two countries in the field of education and research.
