Kazakh UN Peacekeepers Share Stories of Service and Dedication on Peacekeepers Day
The international day of United Nations (UN) peacekeepers, observed on May 29, is a day to recognize and appreciate the efforts of those who work tirelessly to promote peace and security around the world. In a recent interview conducted by The Astana Times, members of the Kazakh contingent shared their stories and experiences as peacekeepers, shedding light on the challenges and rewards of their work.
One of the peacekeepers interviewed was senior sergeant Yerbosyn Tolymbek, who shared his motivations for becoming a peacekeeper and the training he underwent before embarking on the mission to the Golan Heights. Tolymbek’s daily routine now revolves around patrols and monitoring the ceasefire between Israel and Syria, highlighting the risks and responsibilities that come with the job.
Another member of the mission, Talgat Yelibaev, serves as a senior sapper in an engineering sapper platoon. He shared his experiences in clearing mines and the dedication he brings to his duty. Yelibaev also finds time to capture moments with his fellow soldiers, sharing them on social media to showcase the mission’s progress.
Women peacekeepers, like third-class sergeant Yelena Tsoy, also play a vital role in maintaining peace and security. Tsoy, who serves as a cook in the mission, ensures that the personnel are well-fed and satisfied while on combat duty. She values the unity among people from different countries and the exchange of experiences that comes with working in a multinational environment.
