Korisu Day in Kazakhstan: A Celebration of Spring and Forgiveness
Korisu day, celebrated in Kazakhstan on March 14, is a special occasion that holds deep meaning and is widely celebrated in society. This day marks the return of spring and is observed with the practice of letting go of old grievances.
Korisu, which translates to greeting, signals the beginning of a festive period among Kazakhs, welcoming spring and a new year that culminates in the Nauryz celebrations on March 21-22. In the ancient Eastern calendar, the onset of the month of Hamal (known as Amal in Kazakh) aligns with March 14 in today’s calendar, marking the commencement of the Aries constellation.
During Korisu, it is customary to wake up early and pay visits to the elder members of the family and neighbors, at least three households. It is a time to forgive past grievances, set aside enmity, and prepare the traditional table setting known as dastarkhan.
Neighbors greet each other with phrases like “Bir zhasynmen!” or “Zhasyn kutty bolsyn!” which translate to “Happy one year!” or “Happy one birthday!” symbolizing the addition of another year to one’s age.
Based on ancient beliefs in the cyclical nature of the world, Korisu day represents a hope for something new and is a way for people to embrace the light and warmth of the spring season.
One native of Kazakhstan, Aigul Mynbai, shared her fond memories of Korisu Day, recalling the early rise, guest visits, hugs, and wishes of blessings. She reminisced about the joy of giving and receiving joy on this special day.
For many adults, Korisu day holds significance beyond food and festivity, serving as an opportunity for reconciliation and forgiveness. Mynbai shared how her grandmother emphasized the importance of forgiveness and maintaining connections with loved ones, using Korisu as a chance to move on from past grievances and reconnect with others.
