Kazakhstan and EU Collaborate on Future Plans in Brussels
Kazakh Deputy Foreign Minister Roman Vassilenko recently met with representatives of key European Union institutions in Brussels to discuss the future of Kazakhstan-EU cooperation and bolstering partnerships in Central Asia.
The discussions revolved around priority areas of collaboration, including transport and infrastructure projects, sustainable development, energy partnerships, and the resilience of supply chains. Vassilenko engaged with officials from the European External Action Service (EEAS) and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, highlighting the importance of political dialogue, economic cooperation, and preparations for upcoming joint events.
Upcoming engagements such as the EU-Central Asia Ministerial Meeting, the first EU-Central Asia Summit, and the Astana International Forum were on the agenda. Participants expressed interest in expanding engagement in critical areas like raw materials, green energy, and transport corridors, including the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route.
The meetings also delved into regional development and infrastructure projects, exploring joint efforts to develop transport corridors, modernize logistics networks, and promote sustainable energy and digital solutions. Discussions on energy cooperation and supply chain resilience emphasized green energy initiatives and cooperation in low-carbon technologies.
Stability and security in Central Asia were key topics during a meeting with the EU Special Representative for Human Rights, emphasizing the importance of collaboration on the rule of law and humanitarian initiatives. Plans to enhance interparliamentary cooperation between Kazakhstan and the EU were outlined, focusing on parliamentary dialogue and alignment on legislative approaches.
Kazakhstan and the EU reiterated their commitment to strengthening dialogue and expanding practical collaboration across various sectors. The meetings underscored the readiness to continue working on joint initiatives, laying the foundation for a sustainable and long-term partnership.
The European Union is a significant trade and investment partner for Kazakhstan, representing about one-third of the country’s foreign trade and accumulated foreign direct investment. The Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement signed between Kazakhstan and the EU covers various areas of cooperation, including trade, investment, infrastructure development, and cultural exchanges.
With over 3,000 companies with European capital operating in Kazakhstan, the bilateral relationship continues to thrive, with a focus on enhancing economic ties and fostering mutual growth. The discussions in Brussels reaffirmed the mutual commitment to deepening cooperation and enhancing the Kazakhstan-EU partnership for the benefit of both parties.
