Kazakhstan and Hungary Strengthen Parliamentary Ties

ASTANA – On May 6, Kazakh Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Murat Nurtleu welcomed a delegation from the National Assembly of Hungary, focusing on enhancing inter-parliamentary dialogue, expanding humanitarian ties, and bolstering cooperation within international organizations, including the Council of Europe and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

The Hungarian delegation was comprised of notable figures such as Sándor Fazekas, Chair of the Kazakhstan-Hungary Parliamentary Cooperation Group; Sándor Kovács, his Deputy; and Zsolt Németh, a member of the Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).

Emphasis on Collaboration and Human Rights

According to the Kazakh Foreign Ministry’s press service, a significant focus was placed on Kazakhstan’s engagement with the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, particularly in advocating for the rule of law, human rights, and democratic principles. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to a constructive dialogue with European institutions.

Deputy Prime Minister Nurtleu expressed optimism regarding the implementation of the Council of Europe’s Neighborhood Cooperation Priorities (NCP) program for Kazakhstan for 2024-2027. This initiative aims to support human rights and domestic political reforms in line with the initiatives of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

Highlights of Ongoing Reforms

Zsolt Németh and Kazakh Deputy Foreign Minister Roman Vassilenko engaged in discussions to further deepen cooperation. Vassilenko presented a comprehensive overview of Kazakhstan’s systemic political and socio-economic reforms aimed at establishing a Just and Fair Kazakhstan.

Notably, Vassilenko pointed out Kazakhstan’s commitment as a party to four Council of Europe conventions and expressed interest in further collaborations by acceding to additional instruments of the organization. He emphasized that such collaboration would significantly contribute to the country’s political modernization and economic growth.

Strengthening Dialogue and Participation

Additionally, the meeting underscored the value of active participation from Kazakh parliamentarians, government officials, and representatives of non-governmental organizations in PACE sessions. This participation serves as an invaluable platform for sharing best practices and relaying accurate information regarding ongoing developments in Kazakhstan.
