Kazakhstan Anticipates New Cabinet in Government Reshuffle

Kazakh President Tokayev Dismisses Government, Plans New Economic Policy
Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev recently signed a decree to dismiss the government, as reported by the Akorda press service on Feb. 5. First Deputy Prime Minister Roman Sklyar was appointed as the acting Prime Minister, and incumbent ministers were tasked with continuing their duties until the formation of a new government. This decision comes after the Amanat party won the majority in the 2023 elections to the Mazhilis, the lower chamber of the Kazakh Parliament, which mandated them to nominate a candidate for the Prime Minister.
In response to the upcoming changes, Deputy Foreign Minister Roman Vassilenko stated that an extended government session is scheduled for Feb. 7, with the participation of President Tokayev. The session will focus on presenting a new economic policy aimed at making Kazakhstan’s economy more resilient, diversified, and fair, as well as more attractive for foreign investment.
Additionally, the government has announced its forecast for economic development in the year, with a projected GDP growth of 5.3 percent. Alikhan Smailov has been leading the government since January 2022. The upcoming extended government meeting on Wednesday will review the outcomes of 2023 and outline the key objectives for this year.
The changes in the government signal a new direction for Kazakhstan’s economic and political landscape, as the country aims to strengthen its economy and create a more attractive environment for investment and growth. With the upcoming appointment of a new Prime Minister and the focus on a new economic policy, Kazakhstan is poised for potential changes that could impact its future trajectory.
