Hungary and Kazakhstan Continue to Preserve Culture and National Characteristics Despite Pressure
In a statement made on Thursday, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó emphasized that both Hungary and Kazakhstan are committed to preserving their own culture and national characteristics, which ultimately contribute to their strength and ability to withstand crises.
Szijjártó highlighted a recent expression of respect from the Kazakhs towards Hungary and Hungarian culture. He revealed that a street in the Kazakh capital had been named after Sándor Petőfi, a renowned 19th-century reform poet from Hungary. This gesture further strengthens the cultural ties between the two nations.
Amidst the current international political climate characterized by condemnation and criticism, Szijjártó expressed his desire for politics to return to a foundation of mutual respect. He emphasized that mutual respect can only be demonstrated by countries that have a strong sense of self-assurance and possess a rich and respectful culture.
Despite facing pressure to abandon their culture, heritage, and national characteristics, Hungary and Kazakhstan remain proud of their cultural identities and are determined to preserve them. Szijjártó asserted that their culture and national heritage are what give them strength as nations.
The Foreign Minister also acknowledged the challenges faced by those who wish to engage with Hungarian literature in its original language. Hungarian is a difficult language to learn, and there are only 13-14 million Hungarian speakers worldwide. However, he expressed his appreciation for the recent publication of a collection of 196 poems by Sándor Petőfi translated into Kazakh, which will make his works more accessible to a wider audience.
This commitment to preserving culture and national characteristics not only strengthens the bond between Hungary and Kazakhstan but also serves as a testament to the importance of cultural heritage in shaping a nation’s identity.
