Kazakhstan and Singapore Strengthen Economic and Diplomatic Ties
Kazakhstan, known as Central Asia’s most prosperous country, recently welcomed the President of Singapore, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, who highlighted the strong relationship between the two nations. Following Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s state visit, Shanmugaratnam emphasized Kazakhstan’s role as a gateway to the region.
Both countries share a common interest in fostering cohesive, multiethnic, and multireligious societies. They also collaborate on addressing climate change and transitioning to a sustainable planet.
Economic cooperation between Kazakhstan and Singapore is on the rise, with an increasing presence of Singaporean companies in Kazakhstan. The Trans-Caspian International Transport Route provides trade opportunities from China to Western Asia through the Caspian Sea. Air Astana, Kazakhstan’s national flagship carrier, is set to launch direct flights between the two countries, facilitating greater exploration of business opportunities.
President Tokayev’s competence in foreign policy was praised by political scientist Eduard Poletayev. He commended Tokayev’s address at the 46th Singapore lecture, noting the president’s understanding of his country’s goals and means to achieve them. Tokayev’s speech went beyond official protocols, aiming to convey Kazakhstan’s position on the global stage.
Furthermore, Kazakhstan’s classification as a middle power by the German Institute for International and Security Affairs holds strategic significance. Tokayev emphasized the middle powers’ role in the international security system and called for their inclusion in the UN Security Council.
Experts see this as an opportunity for Kazakhstan to enhance its international positioning. Andrey Chebotaryov, director of the Alternativa Center for Contemporary Studies, suggests updating Kazakhstan’s Foreign Policy Concept to emphasize its nuclear-free status and commitment to interethnic and interfaith harmony. Kazakhstan aims to be seen as a proactive country that generates important ideas and initiatives on a regional and global scale.
Overall, the strengthening of economic and diplomatic ties between Kazakhstan and Singapore marks a significant step towards mutual cooperation and partnership in various fields.
