Kazakhstan Considers Global Reactor Suppliers for First Nuclear Plant

ASTANA – The Interdepartmental Commission for the Development of the Nuclear Industry of Kazakhstan recently met on Feb. 25 to discuss proposals from potential suppliers for the country’s first nuclear power plant (NPP).

The commission, comprised of representatives from various state bodies and organizations within the nuclear and energy sectors, is currently evaluating reactor technologies in order to meet Kazakhstan’s increasing electricity demands. The main priorities for the project include safety, reliability, and environmental sustainability, as per the Energy Ministry’s press service.

In an effort to ensure transparency and competitiveness, the commission is considering proposals from leading global reactor suppliers. These suppliers include CNNC from China (HPR-1000), Rosatom from Russia (VVER-1200), KHNP from South Korea (APR-1000, APR-1400), and EDF from France (EPR1200). The shortlisted companies have been asked detailed questions regarding their technological solutions, safety measures, financing options, and environmental considerations.

The final decision on the reactor supplier will be made after a comprehensive evaluation of all factors, keeping in mind the best interests of Kazakhstan. According to a government decree, the Zhambyl district of the Almaty Region has been designated as the site for Kazakhstan’s first NPP, as reported by Kazinform on Feb. 25.
