Kazakhstan Flood Recovery: Thousands Compensated, President Urges Swift Action
The government of Kazakhstan has taken significant steps to support families affected by recent flooding, with 4,521 families already receiving compensation totaling 57.4 billion tenge for repairs and restoration of their homes. Deputy Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbayev shared these updates at a meeting with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on June 7.
The total cost for the complete restoration of housing is estimated at nearly 237 billion tenge. So far, over 64,000 people have been able to return to their homes, while those in evacuation centers are receiving necessary assistance. The flooding has impacted 11,998 residential buildings and 5,359 country houses.
Inspections have been conducted on 16,715 residential buildings in affected areas, with assessments completed for 15,464 structures. Out of these, 9,903 houses require repairs, while 6,875 are deemed irreparable. Plans are in place to purchase 4,525 houses and apartments from the secondary market and to construct 2,350 new houses based on a standard design.
Additionally, agreements have been finalized for the purchase of 1,814 apartments and houses on the secondary market. Currently, 841 families in affected regions have already received new houses and apartments to replace their destroyed homes.
One-time payments exceeding 11 billion tenge have been distributed to 31,642 families out of 32,440 applications received by June 6. This process has been completed in certain regions, with ongoing payments in others. Additional compensation of four billion tenge is being provided to 5,489 families to replace lost essential items.
Efforts to compensate affected businesses have also begun, with regional commissions approving 34 applications from small and medium-sized enterprises totaling approximately 377 million tenge.
President Tokayev has directed the government to accelerate the assessment and technical inspection of damaged housing and to oversee the quality and timing of new construction. The government remains committed to supporting families and businesses affected by the recent flooding in Kazakhstan.
