A New National Ecotourism Standard to Minimize Environmental Impact in Kazakhstan
ASTANA – A new national ecotourism standard is set to take effect on June 1 in Kazakhstan. The goal of this standard is to minimize the environmental impact of tourism in the country while ensuring the preservation of its unique ecosystems and landscapes.
Developed under the UNDP Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN) program, the standard incorporates global sustainability guidelines and provides a framework for eco-friendly tourism services across the nation. It draws upon recommendations from the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) and practices from international certification systems like Travelife and EarthCheck. Additionally, it incorporates ecotourism criteria used in other countries such as Slovenia, Malta, and Botswana.
The primary focus of this standard is to reduce the ecological footprint of tourism activities and protect Kazakhstan’s diverse ecosystems, biodiversity, and natural landscapes. It addresses various aspects of ecotourism, including the classification of eco-tours and routes, energy efficiency, waste management, and biodiversity conservation. These measures are designed to allow tourists to appreciate the beauty of Kazakhstan without causing harm to the environment.
Ecotourism organizations in Kazakhstan are required to adhere to these new standards, which emphasize resource efficiency, energy conservation, and the safety and comfort of tourists. By implementing these standards, a unified service standard will be established, boosting consumer confidence and attracting foreign investments.
One key aspect of the new standard is the emphasis on involving local communities. It provides residents with opportunities to participate in developing tourist routes, establishing guest houses, and implementing projects focused on preserving the nation’s natural heritage.
The development of this document involved consultation with relevant government agencies in tourism, ecology, and health, as well as representatives from the tourism industry, including tour operators, guides, guest house owners, and national park officials.
By adopting this standard, Kazakhstan is positioning itself as an eco-friendly tourism destination that meets global sustainability criteria, further enhancing its international reputation as a leader in responsible tourism practices.
